Henkels & McCoy wins the contract to grade and plant at the 1926 Sesqui-centennial International Exposition held in Philadelphia to commemorate the 150th anniversary of US Independence. Only ten million of an expected 50 million visitors attend, due in part to extraordinarily rainy weather.
Photos: The visual theme of the event was, naturally enough, the Liberty Bell, whose home is in Philadelphia. The enormous, 70 feet high sheet-metal Liberty Bell-shaped gateway was covered with 25,000 100 watt electric lights, which illuminated the fairground at night as autos and pedestrians passed beneath.

"All during these pioneer days we tried hard to get big jobs, prestige jobs. We tried to do them well, and we tried to know what we were doing. The size of our operations has changed considerably over the years, but not our approach. We still try to know what we are doing." -- Jack Henkels (excerpt from An American Adventure)
