 The OSHA ET&D Partnership Agreement, originally signed in 2004, is renewed on August 26, 2006. Henkels & McCoy is one of the original signatories to this agreement, which joins OSHA with representatives from the power transmission and distribution industry along with trade and labor representatives. The Partnership’s primary goal is to reduce the number of fatalities, injuries, and illnesses in the industry…In other safety news, the President’s Award in recognition of the Region showing the greatest improvement in OSHA Recordable Rate from the previous year is earned by the Network Systems & Solutions group… February 2006 marks the introduction of H&M’s Corporate Region Safety Council. The group’s objective is to improve safety in the office setting through initiatives like the Safety Rewards Program and Ergonomics Awareness Program…To date, more than ninety employees have participated in Leading Project Leaders™ (left), an interactive, scenario-based business simulation designed to accelerate skill building and application in project leadership... This year kicks off H&M’s official participation in the United Way campaign and $100,000 is raised through this effort…Additionally, H&M raises more than $60,000 for worthy causes through two golf tournaments on the East and West Coasts.

Electric Power: The City of Glendale (California) and ABB, Inc. engage H&M’s West Region to complete the civil construction and power line work for the installation of the largest GIS station in North America (below left). The effort’s many challenges included sandy soil conditions and the need to install more than 23,000 ft. of high voltage and aluminum cable. The project was completed without any interruption of service and on schedule to meet the customer’s peak load of 338 MW... H&M crews successfully execute a unique project in Dauphin Island (Alabama) Bay for Southern Company Transmission. The initiative is necessary to bolster the historically storm ravaged island’s sole power feed and involved a 46 kV transmission line structure replacement. Crews worked from barges (below right) to complete the change out from wooden to concrete poles. The project was also notable for its environmental safeguards in relation to marine life... H&M is awarded a multi-year T&D alliance contract for a major west coast utility as part of its strategic sourcing initiative designed to improve safety, quality, and cost efficiency…A large Midwest customer awards the I-355 extension project to H&M. The scope of work for the effort, which connects I-55 and I-80, includes relocation of transmission lines and lighting…In the East, crews begin a multi-year project to upgrade existing 69 kV lines for a large Pennsylvania utility customer.
Renewables: H&M undertakes a major wind power project in southern Illinois by providing labor and material to install copper collector cable from inside the towers to the transformers. Additional cable installation is executed from the transformers back to the substation…Crews also begin major installation projects in Washington state, California, and Oregon.
Pipeline/Natural Gas: The Pipeline Division is involved in several significant projects including the Southern Arizona Pipeline Integrity Program for El Paso Natural Gas (new mainline valve extensions, fabrication and installation of new launcher/receivers for conducting hydro-tests, and pipe replacement); the completion of the second phase of the WesPac/Buckeye-Memphis, Shelby County Port Commission Jet Fuel Pipeline Project (including several significant horizontal drills, one of which is a 7,000 foot crossing of Mississippi River); 38 miles of pipeline replacement and rehabilitation in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania for Columbia/NiSource (left); completion of the tie-in construction for the Sunoco Logistics Ohio Turnpike Project; and completion of the Williams/Transco Pipeline Integrity Project.
Communications: The East Region’s York Pennsylvania office undertakes an ambitious “Oil-O-Static” cable replacement project at a B&P tunnel in Baltimore. A project of this magnitude and complexity has not previously been undertaken by any railroad or contractor given the location, close work clearances to high-speed trains, window of construction time, and the age of the structure being modified. Work scope includes demolition of the old duct bank, removal of abandoned transmission cable, and rebuild of new duct bank…The Central Region completes two Rural Utilities Services Fiber projects in Kentucky while beginning another FTTX project in Tennessee…H&M is active in the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) market. One example is the development of a DAS Network in the metropolitan area of a major northeast city. The open network will be used by the wireless industry to improve their coverage and capacity of voice/data services for their customers. H&M’s role in the project includes design, engineering, and permitting services…Our crews can also be found in rural areas of the country. One particularly interesting project benefitted from government funding and entailed supplying fiber capabilities to link rural communities and schools in Virginia to provide access to high-speed communications services.
Other Notables: The Arizona office is awarded Phase Two (comprised of 55 acres with 136 residential lots) of the Show Low Bluff Development, including placement of water and sewer lines, grading, concrete, paving, and drainage for each lot… The Training Services group hits a significant milestone. It has provided outcomes-based training to more than 75,000 eligible participants since 1981. This represents over 25 million hours of classroom training…H&M ramps up our Intelligent Transportation System work with projects starting in several states, including Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Texas. |
